8 years of Pure Balance
A Letter from ALi
8 years…I can hardly believe I'm writing that.
Eight years ago, I opened the doors to Pure Balance.
I wish I could say I remember it like it was yesterday. And I guess in some ways I do. But honestly? It feels like a lifetime ago.
I was 22 years old and still healing from some of my own harmful experiences with Pilates and the fitness world.
I knew very clearly what I didn't want Pure Balance to be.
I didn't want movement to be used as punishment. I didn't want bodies to be shamed. I didn't want instructors talking about earning food or changing the way someone looked. I didn't want someone to walk into our space and leave feeling worse about themselves than when they arrived. I knew how beneficial Pilates could be. It had truly changed my life for the better, and I didn't want the harmful messages so often wrapped up in fitness and movement to get in the way of that for others.
What I didn't quite know yet was how to actually create the thing I was envisioning.
The intention was there. The vision and values were there. The passion for the work was absolutely there. But I had a lot to learn about what it actually looked like to put those values into practice. And, let's be honest, I had a lot to learn about running a business, leadership, and myself.
Now, eight years later and almost 31 years old, I'd like to think I've learned a thing or two. 😉
My teaching methods have evolved. My team has changed and grown. My understanding of what it means to create a safe space for people to move their bodies has deepened—what it truly means to meet people where they are, and give them the support and space they need to grow from there.
As this community has grown, I’ve grown too. As a teacher, a leader, a business owner. And quite frankly, as a human.
But growth, I've learned, is messy. It's not always easy to recognize as progress when you're in the middle of it.
Running a small business is hard. There have been seasons of growth and seasons of uncertainty. Team changes. Personal challenges. A body that sometimes forces me to slow down when my brain has very different plans. Or a brain that sometimes paralyzes me with fear or doubt or anxiety.
There are still so many hard days when I wonder if I'm doing enough. If I will ever be enough.
I wonder why we haven't grown faster. I wonder whether eight years of work should have produced something bigger by now. I question myself. I wonder if I'm capable of doing everything this business needs me to. I feel like I’ll never be able to keep up.
And yet…
It never fails that when I'm having one of those days, I walk into the studio and something reminds me why I’m here. Why I do what I do. Why I LOVE what I do and am so incredibly grateful I get to call this my job.
I notice a client leaving class with a smile on their face, clearly feeling a little lighter than when they walked in.
I walk into the studio ready to teach and find a room full of people chatting and smiling and laughing. Connecting. Being part of a community.
I notice a group of clients still chatting in the parking lot long after class has ended.
I watch someone try something they thought they couldn't do and see that little twinkle of excitement and pride when they realize they just did it.
I teach a class that is fun and challenging and messy and human, and I get to watch people connect with their bodies in ways that feel good.
A review comes in. A client sends me a text. Someone tells me what this place has meant to them.
And just like that, I'm reminded… this is why I created this space. This is what I’ve always wanted Pure Balance to be.
A place where someone who has been made to feel like movement isn't for them discovers that it can be.
A place where you don't have to change your body before you're welcome.
A place where "I can't do that" isn't the end of the conversation.
A place where you can challenge yourself without punishing yourself.
A place where people can be curious about their bodies instead of at war with them.
A place where you can walk through the door exactly as you are.
A place where you feel like you belong.
Over the years, you've given us little glimpses into what Pure Balance has become to you.
You've told us, “This is my safe place to push away the outside world and reconnect body and mind.”
You've said, “I’m trying to build a life I don’t want to escape from, and Pilates at Pure Balance is part of it.”
You've told us you leave feeling stronger and empowered. That you've gained confidence on the Reformer. That you feel welcomed and supported. That this is the best thing you do for yourself.
Those words mean more to me than I can adequately explain.
Because when I think back to that 22-year-old version of myself—still trying to heal her own relationship with her body and with movement, knowing she wanted to create something different but not yet fully understanding how—this is what she was trying to build.
Or at least a part of it… 22-year-old Ali had (and current Ali still has) LOTS of BIG dreams 😉.
So today, on our 8th birthday, the thing I'm most proud of isn't any of the traditional ways we're supposed to measure whether a business is successful.
It's that people feel safe here. Welcomed here. Well met here.
That people feel safe enough to be beginners. To modify. To wobble. To rest. To laugh. To challenge themselves. To come back after they've been away. To take up space. To show up imperfectly.
That people feel like they belong.
And I'm incredibly proud that what started with me is no longer just mine.
For a long time, so much of Pure Balance lived in my head and my heart. I was the one trying to hold the vision, teach the classes, build the relationships, make the decisions, solve the problems, and figure out what this place was becoming.
That's not what Pure Balance looks like anymore.
Now I get to watch other people care about this place, this community, and these values alongside me.
I see our instructors create moments of connection and safety that happen entirely without me. I see our team make someone feel welcome before I ever meet them. I watch each person bring their own personality and gifts into the studio and make Pure Balance better because they're part of it.
There is something really special about realizing that this thing I started at 22 has grown beyond me.
I am so incredibly thankful for the team we have right now—and for the fact that I no longer have to carry it all alone.
There is still so much I want for Pure Balance.
I'm doing a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes right now to make the business itself stronger—to improve our systems, our client experience, our team, and the foundation underneath everything we've built. I want more people to find us. I want this community to keep growing. And yes, I hope some of the things I've dreamed about for eight years are still ahead of us.
But I also don't want to be so focused on where we're going that I miss what is already here.
Because when I walk through those doors, I see it.
We built something really special.
And when I say "we," I mean that.
Pure Balance wouldn't be Pure Balance without every person who has walked through our doors over the last eight years. Every client who took a chance on us. Every person who told a friend. Every instructor and team member who shared their gifts here. Every person who came back after life got complicated. Every person who trusted us with their body when movement hadn't always felt like a safe place.
You are the reason we're still here eight years later.
And you are the reason I still believe so deeply in where we're going.
So this week, we're not doing anything huge or elaborate for our birthday.
We're just celebrating you.
We'll have some treats at the studio, a few birthday touches, and a wall where I'd love for you to leave us a note answering one question:
What does Pure Balance mean to you?
Because after eight years, I think those answers tell the story of Pure Balance better than I ever could.
Thank you for eight years of trusting us, growing with us, laughing with us, moving with us, and making Pure Balance what it is.
I'm incredibly proud of what we've built.
And I'm really excited to see who we become next.
With so much love and gratitude,
Ali 🩵
